Yesterday, I had a rheumatology appointment.

As I explained in an earlier post, I have been waiting for a dermatology app. to have a sun damage spot removed from my forehead, and in the meantime have been taken off abatercept in case there is any link between the two.

Usually I go in, see the nurse and she calls in the doc if needed. She made the app to see how I was doing just with mtx and hydroxy in case I needed a steroid jab in the meantime.
Don't know if she was abs or not but I went straight in to see the doc.

He looked at my meds list from last time and asked how much mtx I was on, and talked about reducing it
Strange I thought, so I reminded him that I am now not on abat.
Why he asked. So I explained that he took me off it etc etc.
Eventually I think the penny dropped, and he said well I can't reduce the mtx then until I know if the spot is malignant or not, which made me feel so good!!!!

He is not a good people person, quite abrupt and impatient but I have always thought until now, that is,that he knows whats what.
Fortunately I had just received the derm. app for a couple of weeeks time.
So he just said I will see you in 3 months, started talking on his dictaphone and waved me out of the door!!

The astounding thing is he did not even ask how I was.Confused

The app' served absolutely no purpose what so ever!!Sad It is a 60 mile round trip and £2 parking!!!

Left feeling astounded and not a little cross. Why all the record keeping if not to be looked at????

hi Zena,

sorry to hear you had an awful appointment,

was it your usual Consultant? i think i would phone the Rheumy Nurse and ask if your medication is up to date on their system first off! and if you do feel you need a steroid injection then i would tell her.

i hope you get a good result when the Dermatology appointment come's round, i can't think what else you can do now apart from speaking to your Rheumy Nurse, she is normally my first port of call if i have a problem or upset about something.

do let us know how things are.

Hi Zena - so sorry that you had a completely frustrating trip - even counter-productive, as it's understandable that you're feeling so astounded and cross. At least you have the dermatology appointment to look ahead to, and you'll soon get that bit resolved. It's very bad that the rheumy didn't ask how you are - so I'll ask instead. How are you feeling now that you're off the abatercept? Is the RA returning or is the mtx and hdx holding it at bay? I do hope that you're able to keep well while all this goes on - it's a lesson to all us RAers - we really do need to develop the patience of saints as well as being incredibly assertive patients, just to cope with the inadequacies of care in the NHS!!

Very best wishes - Sylvia xx

Hi Zena,

What an awful appointment - and what a rude man! That must be so frustrating for you, especially after the round trip you have to make to see him. I do hope you can get sorted when your dermatology appointment comes around. I can`t believe you weren`t even asked how you were.

Funnily enough I had a rheumy appointment yesterday - it was a registrar, instead of my usual consultant, who is recovering from surgery herself. In complete contrast to you, my bloods were discussed, my joints examined, and my general state of health discussed - but this is the norm where I go. He went through all my meds too. The thing of real interest was that he is recommending to my GP that I have another pneumonia jab - they are supposed to last 10 years, but my hospital prefers we have them every seven years, so I have to sort that next week. My round trip is about 30 miles, and I feel so angry on your behalf after your contrasting treatment.

Might it be worth speaking to your rheumy nurse?

Take care,

Kathleen x

Sigh.....(shaking head). Sorry you had such a rotten appointment. As they are so few and far between and our functioning relies so much on them they really do affect us deeply. As you said the most basic question should be to ask how you are feeling. I hope you get a better response with the dermatologist and that you're not going to fret too much about the sun spot. He really shouldn't have used the M word without sensitivity and a chance to ask some questions. I think some consultants forget decent manners and how to be human sometimes. All I can say is I'd be frustrated and disappointed too. I think you should perhaps consider having a word with the nurse. You'd probably feel better for it. Best wishes with everything. XXX

Thankyou all for your kind words Smile
I do usually see the nurse and she is very good, checks all my joints, looks at blood results etc. Always ready to listen and offer advice and support. I think she was just not there that day and he was struggling to cope on his own.
One thing I have become aware of and that is, he does not seem to use his computer when I'm there, just my hospital folder, where as the nurses bring everything up on the screen and straight away everything is there, so its easy to see whats what. When ever I go to other medical app. my notes are always up on the screen when I go in. Just seems a bit strange.
I dont think he is intentionally rude, its just his way. He is just a bit of an odd character!!! It almost seems quite comical if it wasn't so important!! I do laugh about him with my family, seems easier than getting upset! BigGrin
I will speak to the nurse about it when I next see her. I am getting stiffer as time goes on without the infusions but not too bad, considering, so will wait until after I have seen the dermatologist. I have got another app. in a couple of months, so hopefully the nurse will be there.....
Keep smiling, Zena xx
